A Day Out of School
Rozenn Brécard
A sister and a brother miss the bus to school. To hell with school! They will steal this day to routine…
Along the day, they laugh a lot, steal a small boat, ferret around a port warehouse, climb a cliff and even bathe in the cold sea. But mostfly, they walk: on the paths, through the fields, paying attention to the beauty surrounding them, either in the wild landscapes or in the coloured piles of riggings and fishing nets. Punctuated with arguments and reconciliations, this daylong expedition will test their bond and bring them back home, as if nothing had happened.
Carried by lively dialogues and various styles of images, this story questions the notiong of wondering and danger and invites to think about children’s freedom in a world that is more and more connected and protected.

The author and illustrator
After graduating from the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts, Rozenn Brécard worked for the press and children’s publishing. In her notebooks, she compulsively sketches the passersby, her neighbours in the metro or the cyclists. In 2018, she leaves Brussels and moves to Britanny where the rocks, moors and seaside paths replace the city’s crowd. With gouache paint, she plays with transparency and also uses coloured pencils. In 2021, she illustrated La Belle Jeannette written by Rémi Courgeon published by Seuil Jeunesse. Le Détour is her first picture book as an author and illustrator.
